MY WALK FOR LUPUS

Men and women, young and old, all from different backgrounds came out to DeAnza Cove in Mission Bay, on Saturday for one purpose- to walk in search of a cure for lupus.

Although only a few hundred people showed up, amazingly the open vibe of love and support from volunteers and participants to people with lupus, it felt like a thousand people came out to support the cause.

The entertainment was great. People enjoyed music, food and two clowns who looked more like knock-off editions of Ronald McDonald, almost scary looking. The kids didn't want to bother with them, I guess someone figured everybody needs some humor in their lives.

For the most of the day the sun was hidden behind the gloomy clouds and the temperature stayed under 70 degrees. For the average person the cold weather could have called for a reschedule, but for lupus patients it was a picture perfect day. Mainly because the sun can take a beating on lupus patients. Most prefer not to be in the sun. Although sunblock helps, its better to avoid the sun much as possible.

People with lupus who participated in the walk were given purple butterflies, but everyone was given a sticker to put the name(s) of who they were walking for. Some people even had up to three names.

The walk began shortly after 10am. During the three mile scenery walkers had a clear site of ducks, people fishing, playing water sports and jogging.

For a person in good health, the three mile walk was a cool breeze, but for some lupus patients even half a mile was a struggle. Some people were so drained they immediately had to take a seat and cheer people on. The participants that made it to the finish line were greeted by a crowd of volunteers shouting cheers of praise.

The fundraising turned out to be a success as well. People who raised over $250 were awarded T-shirts and raffle tickets to win lavish prizes; Day spa for two worth $500, Free Boot camp trainer, Massages, gift bags, and dinner tickets.

One lucky winner received dinner for two, the day spa and a T-shirt.

Goes to show raising money for a good cause can pay off, in many ways.

The Lupus foundation raised over $40,000.

The next walk for Lupus will be held next month in Orange County.

PURPLE BUTTERFLIES

"BECAUSE NO ONE SHOULD GO THROUGH IT ALONE."

May is Lupus awareness month. This Year the annual walk for a cure will be held in San Deigo on May 9th at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay.

I have taken a great intrest in finding a cure. My sister, aunt, best friend, and boyfriend have lupus, and everyday is a struggle. A beautiful sunny, warm day, can be thier nightmare.

For some, it's even hard to get out of bed because the pain is so excruciating, but still their world should not have to stop.

Lupus is colorblind and is not sexiest.

I hope that you will help in finding a cure with support and love by spreading the word and/or joining the walk for a cure on May 9th.

We are trying to raise $100,000 that will go towards research, medicine and support those in need.

In early April President Obama said to heck with it and eased up on all limits on the ability of individuals to visit and send money to relatives in Cuba.

Is it time for the United States to stop being stubborn in time of economic needs and allow trade embargo with Cuba?

It amazes me that with all the concern and media coverage on the swine flu, people are still not taking it seriously.

I've heard some people blame it on the media for causing an over reaction, causing people to go into panic, and millions of dollars being lost in tourism.

Really, what needs to happen for people to take it seriously?

Do we need all the schools in the nation to shut down before we can take it seriously?

Remember the friend I mentioned earlier who said they're still going to Mexico, regardless of the drug war they have going on-because they'll just stay close to the hotel, and who thinks the swine flu is a joke- if it was that serious the traveling company would have canceled the trip?

Yeah America my naive, I need government proof, if I'm going to die it will be in paradise friend is still heading to Cancun.

All I ask is that they in no way come back from Mexico and head towards Orange County, ever.

Some think its a joke, but truth is, you never know.

ITS BARBIE'S WORLD, WE JUST PLAY IN IT

We all love Barbie. How could you not America.

Although I wasn't much of a fan myself, playing around with a doll not my color, with a mansion bigger than my house, with a red Corvette....well, it just wasn't my style.

But now, I can totally see why people love the Bitch.

She's been a fashion icon since day one. Rocking the hottest fashion, owning house's bigger than my own, and every girl in America wanted to be just like her.

She was the first to wear a bathing suit, have a live in boyfriend and now she's a 50 year old woman who has a tattoo.

Yes, Barbie came to realise your only old as you feel and for her there's no slowing down.

Matell's latest invention of Barbie is styling. She comes with a set of stickers - flowers, butterflies- pink heart inserted Ken's and all that's pink. The stickers can be placed on Barbie wherever you like and Barbie even gives you a play gun for her Barbette's.

Of course its for children so its washable, so children can get really creative. It's actually a really good idea.

Now don't go flip out sweeties and protest Barbie. Yes, corporations are trying to make a quick buck,but were still in recession.

If your worried that Matell is sending the wrong message to young girls, that's your problem. Most young moms have slut marks hiddes somewhere already. So why not embrace them?

Besides, if your Barbette's already own a doll, you've already set her up for having low self esteem due to Barbies fake image. What woman do you know, who hasn't had plastic surgery, comes even close to looking curvy as Barbie?

I'll wait. Get the picture?

The tattoo's are press on and if you dislike the idea, don't buy it. It's that simple.

I think it's actually a good idea that Barbie recreates herself and is staying up with the times.

It also makes naive parents who continues to buy Kim a doll, inorder to make up for lost times, actually has to sit down and take the time to talk with their children about dressing a certain way,the nature of body art, and the importance of carrying themselves as ladies.

SWINE FLU HAS U.S. SINGING THE BLUES

I was chatting with a girlfriend about the Swine Flu and she was saying how she wasn't taking it serious.

I asked her " girl, did you get a mask?"

"Nope."

Why not, I said.

You know you live in little Mexico already.

"Girl, its not that serious. She said. Plus the virus is suppose to be so tiny it can leak through a mask."

I thought, that's the same attitude people had about catching HIV- it can't happen to me.

This morning watching MSNBC I was disgusted to learn the issue at hand isn't important enough to shut down U.S./Mexico borders, yet Mexico city is basically, shut down.

How dumb can we be?

I was talking to another friend of mine who's been planning a Mexico trip for labor day weekend.

Like I thought, he is still going.

I advised him to take his own bottle of Hennessy.

He will.

People, wake up, get a clue.

Stay your ass out of Mexico, get a damn mask, cover your mouth, wash your hands.

Sadly, the swine flu has already hit our backyards. Maybe it is too late.

Maybe the world is finally coming to an end, and the only solution is to get right with God, Buddha, or whoever you believe in.

The world cant go on forever but who would have thought our carelessness would come to this.

When coaching beauty pageants, future competitors should be advised when to shut up and go with the flow.

By following her ethics and staying true to what she believed in Carrie Prejean Ms. California missed the chance of becoming the next Miss America last Sunday because she couldn’t bit her tongue for one question:

“Should other states, like Vermont follow suit on allowing gay marriages? Why or why not?”

Some people who believe in the old American saying “ by any means necessary” to win Miss USA would have thought carefully of the question, gave a second look at the judge, who is openly gay Perez Hilton, and said “ Why not, allow gay marriages, everybody deserves to be happy.”

Yeah, right.

When asked what she believed was right when it comes to gay marriages, she couldn’t keep religion out of it.

"Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other.”
Okay I agree to that, secretly or open.
“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage.”
Depends on what part of the land you live on.
“You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offence to anybody out there.”
Sounds like she was beating around the question to me, but Hilton still stomped her. No offense but did you take a good look on who was asking the question?
Honestly, you have a gay judge asking you about his personal life, and you bluntly say I don’t believe in your happiness, then to think you still have a chance at winning, yeah right.

She must really be blonde or the dye has gotten to her head. One thing I will agree on is that she stuck to her beliefs, stood her ground and we could use more people like her in office. Were she when the Bush administration was jerking us around.

Truth is even if she didn’t win the pageant, she’s still Miss America to me.

BOSTON MED STUDENT IS CRAIGSLIST KILLER

When thinking of serial killers we imagine they come from broken homes, poverty, were sexually abused, or possible a jail record. While others are just mentally ill.

But what is the excuse for 22 year- old Philip Markoff, a medical student at Boston University who has been identified by police as the Craigslist Killer?

Markoff is currently being held without bail

Never would we have thought a person who wanting to take on the challenge of saving lives, secretly hide the lust of taking one by their own hands with no justification of why.

Let’s face it.

Do we really need to know why Markoff lured women off Craigslist just to kill them America? Or do we just want to know?

Some of the most memorable serial killers Charles Manson, Ted Bundy and John Way Gacy, were smart men, who had a way with words. Women especially, adored them. But to this day do we really know why they committed the crimes they did?

Wouldn’t we be more disappointed if Markoff’s excuse was simple; in the day he wanted to practice giving life, while at night he found it more interesting and loved the thrill of taking one?

Will his plea bargain be any different if medical records showed he had split personalities?

America its sickening to know we had a future, potential doctor attending class in the day, planning weddings for the summer and by night killing women off of Craigslist.

The most sickening part is his future fiancé Megan McAllister, according to CNN wrote in Markoff's defense an email to ABC that he was set up, and could not have committed the crimes. "All I have to say to you is Philip is a beautiful person inside and out and could not hurt a fly!"

Yeah I’m sure that’s what Laci Peterson thought too. No offense.

Ladies, wake up.

Don’t be so naïve. Some women have been married for years just to learn their husbands don’t turn out to be who they thought they were. Look at Mel Gibson who was married twenty odd years.

Divorce.

Lets be honest, do you really know the person who you wake up to every morning, thoughts and dreams? When’s the last time you discussed together your nightmares?

TO BE OR NOT TO BE :MARIJUANA, IS IT TIME TO MAKE IT LEGAL?

People can argue it’s not a drug, it’s not addicting, and it should stay illegal.

I agree, why? Because then it stays tax free!

It’s the only product that prices will stay the same, unless a raid happens taking out supply and demand, it’s not addicting, and rehab works (if it comes to that point and you need it).

It’s not a drug where I come from but more like a healer. It relaxes you when you’re nervous, helps some to focus more on reading and studying, and if you have an eating problem, Mary Jane (marijuana) is the perfect answer for you.

My aunt was diagnosed with Lupus a few years back, as well as my sister, ex-boyfriend and best friend. All who have chronic pain and was given a grocery bag full of medicine to help “ease the pain.”

None of which work. Their solution, sneak a toke.

The greatest argument of why it’s not legal is said to be a gateway drug, leading towards other harmful drugs such as cocaine and heroin. I strongly agree, that some people use excuses to try things they normally wouldn’t (I was drunk, so it doesn’t count).

Reality is people will experiment with drugs no matter the circumstances. I know some people who have never smoked in their lives but tried meth and became addicts. Can someone answer that one?

Curious but worried about side effects? Don’t be.

You don’t have to worry about spending your rent money on a sack, or stealing from Sue to get a hit. What people don’t know is its damn near cheaper for a sack than you pay for gas a week. And there are no side effects……Let me be honest for a minute, a guaranteed side affect is you might gain weight because the after effects are known to give you munchies. That’s when you have an appetite to eat anything in site.

That’s when mind control comes in, control your hunger people. Enjoy your high.

Should marijuana become legal? For those in need and are scared or have chronic diseases but terrified to get it illegally, yes.

For those who and has been a part of the Marley nation, I think we all agree it shouldn’t be legalized, if the way things are now will change and especially if the government is just trying to make another dollar.

Personally I think smokers have been doing just fine without it being legal. Disagree?

Yes, America we have finally said to hell with it all and we’ve taken it all the way to the White house’s front door steps, well as close as we could get to the fence before being tear gassed by secret service.

Tens of thousands of Americans had tea on their minds, but it wasn’t Lipton’s ice tea they were thirsty for. Protestors across the country came out to express their outrage with government spending in bail outs, tax increases, and the stimulus bill.

The motive for the outraged protest seems clear to me that Americans are tea’d up: T.E.A. taxed enough already, and feed up with the Bull ish. Well at least some people.

Organizers said they wanted to channel the Boston’s Tea Party rebellion and what better way to get the word across than Facebook and Twitter? That’s right both social networks went full fledge in helping people to voice their opinions and sparked a national tea party.

Good move, whoever came up with the idea.

It wasn’t all fun and games, some protestors were so upset they threw a box of tea bags over the fence at the White House. I guess it would have been symbolic but the secret service weren’t feeling like tea.

What is the answer to this tax anxiety that has reached its climax?

President Obama not breaking a sweat came up with the idea of making a simpler tax code.
My suggestion is he should think about breaking it down for fifth graders to read, being that a lot of people didn’t graduate high school and it could be one reason why people pay tax prepares to handle their taxes.

Not saying those who did not graduate high school can’t read it’s just harder to understand.

President Obama vows to rewrite the tax code and simplify it, so that you can avoid dreading April 15, making taxes quicker, easier, and less expensive for you to file a return.

I support President Obama and he made a good point "For too long, we've seen taxes used as a wedge to scare people into supporting policies that increased the burden on working people instead of helping them live their dreams," Obama said. "That has to change, and that's the work that we've begun."

Well Mr. President you better make some more changes for the better soon, or next time instead of a tea party ---someone might become a real rebel and throw some hot eggs & grits in the fountain and that wouldn’t be nice.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

Yesterday I had my first live blog shot that will be posted shortly, and at first I was a little nervous but I must admit I had a ball.

The lights were beaming on my forehead, and for a minute I thought my MAC makeup was going to start running. I wonder if Brian Williams from NBC Nightly News has the same problem? Any hints you can give me for furture reference? After all I plan on entering million of viewers homes through television after graduation.

But once the camera came on, and I had a mic- check 1,2,1,2, and my reflection appeared on the screen, I was ready for some action.

I will admitt my posture could use some help, but damn it I look good on t.v.

PRESIDENT OBAMA SHOW O.C. LOVE

President Obama, paid Costa Mesa a visit this week and I missed him. Yes, I am ashamed that I could not indulge in such pleasure of being in his prescense, but I didnt have a ticket,it was hot and I was tired.

Like millions of other Americans, I watched him on T.V.

The moment he stepped off Air Force One, I was jumping and screaming. It's crazy how a President gets me aroused like Rapper, Jay-Z or Denzel Washington. He's like our generations #1 Rock star, whom ever that may be.

I also saw he made an appearance on the Jay Leno Show, and I must say my President looks good. He has a swag like no other President before him.

AIG CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY TAX PAYERS ARE PISSED

According to the head honcho of AIG Edward Liddy,Fincial Services and CEO, is bewildered that his employees, who received bonus's and some recipients left the company after getting their share, were getting death threats.

This he claims is a counter argument for not releasing the names of the recipients and will only release the names if subpoenaed.

This guy is a jerk. If your going to give up the names by subpoena, you should just give them up anyway.

Sounds like AIG management is a trick for a trade, Ill only give them up if you threaten me.

That explains why employees received a bonus. " Well pay you not to tell, and so you dont feel that guilty you can leave the company."

When is corporate America going to get a clue? Everybody is money hungry and wether they fully trust their employees or not, trust and believe somebody is going to tell, or write a book.

NEW DIRECTION FOR FULLYBLACK CONFESSIONS

When I started this blogging thing I was clueless.
Until last week, a guest speaker in one of my Communication classes made an interesting point, and now im taking her up on it.

From here out, this blog will still be about politics, but from a black woman's point of view.

IMPERFECT BILL WILL HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION

Even I can’t believe it, but he did it. President Obama openly admitted to signing an “imperfect bill” with earmarks, claiming it was necessary to move ahead. But before jumping guns on this one, I pulled out the dictionary to look up what an earmark was.

EARMARK: a congressional provision that directs approved funds to be spent on specific projects or that directs specific exemptions from taxes or mandated fees. Typically, a legislator seeks to insert earmarks that direct a specified amount of money to a particular organization or project in his/her home state or district.

And there you have it. Even in recession groups have found a loop hole to get their money off the top.

Here is a hint on what makes it an “imperfect bill”, it has to deal with lobbyist- you know a “favor for a favor” type of deal.

You see they go hand in hand. Lobbying is the practice of influencing decisions made by government. Now, a lobbyist is a person who tries to influence legislation on behalf of a special interest or a member of a lobby. Governments often define and regulate organized group lobbying but there are always loops holes.

That’s the problem, the loop holes.

President Obama knows it, and claims he will take precaution in trying to prevent any loop holes from passing through by treating this bill like two teenagers attending prom, under strict “adult supervision.”

Like prom, President Obama cannot have his full undivided attention on the bill and close every loop hole. So let’s just hope his designated supervisors don’t have their hands out for some cash themselves and are really looking out for the good of us all.

North Korea is willing to face off with the big dogs, good luck

North Korea, like other countries around the world are pissed off and taking all precautions to make sure the United States doesn’t interfere with their internal affairs.

Tuesday, North Korea claimed to launch a satellite as part of its peaceful space program, the U.S., South Korea, Russia, Japan and China don’t believe it, and North Korea doesn’t care making a vow to retaliate against any one seeking to shoot it down.

The uproar over the satellite according to U.S. national intelligence director Dennis Blair is the technology is no different from that of a long-range missile and its success means the communist nation is capable of striking the mainland U.S.

The situation cannot go ignored like our nations debt has in the past, leaving us to face the consequences of recession. Action needs to be taking now and ignoring North Korea can send us to an early death, or another war.

They cannot be trusted.

History repeats itself. They pulled the same scheme to conceal its missile development in 1998, when one of their missiles flew over Japan, when it ( North Korea) was suppose to be putting a satellite into orbit.

Hello North Korea, Bush nor Clinton is the president anymore, no more trying to pull a quick one over us!

Call us Kobe, head of the snake, or a country headed towards failure. I agree, it might be time for us to stop focusing on other countries internal affairs and pay attention to home, but for now we need to cover our back and take all precautions to not get attacked. For awhile I could never understand why the most powerful country in the world also ranks the most hated.

Then in deep thought I began putting some of the pieces in the puzzle together. I came across the depiction of a bully’s reputation being threatened and not only to boost up their own self-esteem, but to hold their place in hierarchy, they victimize the weakest person. And that seems to be the same issue for America. And other countries are feed up and will bring out the guns to prove it.

The big picture here is if North Korea is lying and the satellite launch turns out to be a missile launch we could have bigger issues to worry about than how to correct the economy, because we won’t have one.

Sources did not say when a launch would take place, but South Korea cited the dates April 4-8, confirming a report by Yonhap news agency.

THE GREEDY REPUBLICANS ARE AT IT AGAIN

The greedy Republicans are at it again.

Republicans are peeved over the stimulus bill President Obama has dished out into the economy, confronting the idea that spending, instead of cutting taxes is not only irresponsible, but will put future generations back at square one, broke.

Its time for Republicans to wake up.

Were living a nightmare on Elm street that Republicans built- a dead end that was foreshadowed along time before the 21st century recession hit.

So why play the blame game now?

In the latest roar on Tuesday, Republican leaders attacked Obama once again on his arrogant choices in closing the gap on the economies down fall. Republicans claim that the $787 billion economic stimulus bill will haunt future generations in the long haul.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, gave the Republican Party’s official response, stating “ The way to lead is not to raise taxes and put more money and power in hands of Washington politicians.”

When we hear Republicans we automatically assume they live a comfortable, if not lavish, lifestyle. No longer can we depend on banks or major corporations to protect us. Reality is we have ran out of options. If the Republican party is so against Obama’s bail out policy now, what was holding them back during the Bush administrations from not taking action then?

Brazenly, Republicans and President Obama cannot avoid the fact of knowing what struggles lied before us. “Though challenges went unsolved, we still managed to spend more money and pile up more debt, both as individuals and through our government, than ever before”, stated Obama.

So what is the problem here? If what the Republicans claim is true, and in the long run future generations will indeed suffer from the stimulus bail out plan, they may have to start pinching their own pockets, because now their kids future are in jeopardy.

No matter who you voted for, reality is were all Americans facing the same demons: people are being laid off work, homes are being foreclosed and children still have dreams to go off to college. Truth is, we have a trillion dollar deficit and if Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey all the million/billionaires put together and donated money, Americans would still be broke.

So cheers to Obama for being sick and tired of going through the same struggles and going against false hope that the economy will change itself, and if the plan fails…..at least he tried.

LOST MY JOB, PAYCHECK AND MY MARBELS

This is a little off topic, but since this is my space I’m going to utilize it. Everyone is in frenzy about budget cuts and stimulus checks. I must say as a student I didn’t think too much of it when major corporations start downsizing. At my previous company work hours decreased from forty hours a week down to thirty. At last, my prayers as a part time student and full time worker had been answered. Or so I thought until this week when they sent me a separation pay check that was pretty nice, until I lost it.

So as it is at 1:36a.m. to release my tense, stress and embarrassment I have come to two conclusions.
One, the day I decided to clear my purse out, it was thrower away, along with my college I.D. and two, I’ve been robbed. But as an optimistic, I’m praying that’s not the answer.

Ironically I get a call from the pops saying I have a check from the IRS, which was somewhat a lifesaver but still it compares nothing to my check…..urhhh. Not to mention I have to renew my license in less than five days and now im officially broke. Did I mention I’m broke, and have a birthday in six days.

Usually when these things happen there is a lesson to be learned, but as for now all I can say is thanks President Obama for the stimulus check, because otherwise I would have to starve (literally) next week.

Allow me to introduce myself, currently I am a senior attending California State University, Fullerton. I call myself a journalist (freelancer) and living everyday to my highest potential with the tools I was blessed with; FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

ETTA JAMES " OBAMA IS NOT MY PRESIDENT"

President Barack Obama has already managed to cause a cat fight between the 71-year-old legendary soul singer Etta James and music diva Beyonce Knowles, when she was chosen over James to perform her 1961 signature hit " At Last," for President Obama and first lady Michell Obama's first dance at the Inaugural ball.






The former Chess Records recording artist, James was furious for being overlooked to perform her own song taking jab at President Obama during a concert at Seattle's Paramount Theater saying " You know that President of yours? You know the one with the big ears?" James statement was recorded by TMZ proving she may be old but she sure is bold " Wait a minute, he ain't my president. He may be yours."

James made it clear that she is no fan of Beyonce. In fact, next time they meet Bey might need her body guards to hold the old lady back because she is liable to get a smack down. " That woman he had singing for him…the great Beyonce is going to get her ass whooped." Whether its envy or an old lady being purely bitter James holds nothing back "I can't stand Beyonce."




Let’s be clear here, America is ready for change so what is the problem James? Maybe like the rest of us President Obama wanted some change in his music too. What is that old saying? “ Out with the old and in with the new.”


In the same breath, what happen to respect our elders. Maybe it would have been nice if James was notified that her signature hit was going to be song, just not by her.

So what is your opinion? Do you think it was right for James to take a shot at President Obama? Is Beyonce to blame, after all she was just doing her job, right?

One thing is for sure, when President Obama said change, he wasn’t kidding.

DONT BLAME ME, BLAME THE MAILMAN

Finally some people will have an excuse of why they couldn't pay their bills on time " the mail ran late."

According to Congress.org due to the economical cut backs that seems to be affected everyone the U.S. Postal Service is asking Congress to reset regulations regarding the mail delivery date from six days to five days a week.

The reason for the abrupt change is believed to be due to the declined revenue and the increased cost in usage of Postal Services. Of course they( U.S. Postal Service) claim during the holidays they would preside to deliver six days a week, because in a recession its more important to deliver a Christmas card, than a birthday or sympathy card.

Some may not like the idea, but truth is we are in a recession and like President Obama said "some changes have to be made." So why not the U.S. Postal Services?

After all when T-mobile disconnects my cell phone, or Edison turns off the electricity, I can blame it on the mailman " it's in the mail" or no I did not get that notice " the mail must have skipped my area that week."

In actuality, the time has come to make scarafices. But the bills still have to be paid. I don't think the U.S. Postal Serives should cut back on their delivery dates and I find it appualing that they would even suggest certain " rural areas" would recieve their mail six days aweek in contrast with others only recieving mail five days a week. Sounds like discrimination; as if one person or area recieves more important mail than the next.

If Congress decideds to grant the U.S. Postal Services thier ridiculous request, Congress should change the workforce week entirely. How does four day weekends sound? And while they're being so generous why not cut back the college graduation requirements, since most of the California State cut backs is in education?
